Don Armeni Park Race Tomorrow

Published by admin at 4:58 pm under Tips and Tricks

I am not sure about the rest of fleet 1 but I am excited about our next to last race of the season which is taking place tomorrow.  I thought I would post some valuable links for the race:

Alki Point Wind Forecast

Seattle Tide Charts

I also want to focus on my starts tomorrow.  To that end I would like to know if there are any thoughts from fleet 1 and beyond on the start strategies & skills which have (or have not) worked for you?

Here are the Items which I think about for our standard windward, leeward, finish type race:

  1. Favored Pin – The pin closest to the weather mark.  (To find the favored side of the starting line I luff up at the center of the line and which ever pin is further to windward I target as the Favored Pin.)
  2. Favored Tack – The tack which will take me most directly to the weather mark. (When I luff up on the line if the weather mark is off my Port bow then a Starbord Tack is favored & vice versa)
  3. Favored Side – The side of the course with the most wind or the best shifts. (My general rule here is to pick the side of the course which either

Once I have decided what is favored I usually don’t have much of a plan for how exactly to approach the line given various conditions.  I sometimes follow Charmed Juan or Wooglin, trying to get some clues on where to be, but sometimes I just wing it.  When I do I often find myself Late, or unable to reach high enough to make the pin.

Anyone have some advice?
